Status Update: 2 H Mart stores expected in 2021 will bring Irvine’s total to 3 (2024)

Irvine will have two more H Mart supermarkets by year’s end when the Korean-American chain lands at Northpark Plaza and Westpark Plaza, bringing the city’s total to three.

The stores are replacing Albertsons, which are due to close by the end of February.

H Mart, which has an anchor location at Diamond Jamboree, offers a large selection of traditional Asian food plus the usual pantry essentials. The market is known for its kimchi bar, a selection of pickled and spiced cabbage. It also has an array of produce and fresh fish.

The stores at Northpark Plaza and Westpark Plaza will span more than 52,120 square feet and 59,974 square feet, respectively, Irvine Co., the landlord, said in a statement.

Northpark Plaza is at the corner of Irvine Boulevard and Culver Drive; Westpark Plaza is at the corner of Alton Parkway and Culver Drive.

The supermarket chain, based in New Jersey, has 97 stores in the United States. Other Orange County stores are in Garden Grove and Buena Park.

Grant for heart-valve research

Brea-based Nininger Medical has been awarded a $256,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

The Small Business Innovation Research Phase 1 grant will provide funding for company research and development of a new device for transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement or TTVR.

Nininger is working on refining heart-valve replacement parts, specifically “valve leaflets.” Its research aims to make the leaflets 10-times thinner using a film vs. animal-sourced pericardium, so the replacement valve can fit into a smaller catheter used to deliver the material to the heart.

The Phase 1 grant means the company can apply for a Phase 2 grant of up to $1 million.

Nininger Medical was founded in 2019 by Daniel Anderson and Lowie Van Assche.
