Synopsis

Three years into the war, Mahito Maki loses his mother in a tragic fire at the hospital. Shortly thereafter, his father marries Natsuko, the younger sister of Mahito's mother. They take Mahito out of Tokyo to seek refuge in his late mother's rural family home. There, Mahito is constantly taunted by a strange gray heron, who seems to have taken an interest in him.

Unable to come to terms with his loss and struggling to adjust to a new life in an unfamiliar place, the boy is shocked to discover that Natsuko is pregnant. To make matters worse, the pesky heron can speak—and claims that Mahito's mother is still alive. Luring him into a mysterious tower near the residence, the heron says that Mahito can save her from death, but the boy is not easily swayed.

When Natsuko disappears one day, however, Mahito watches her walk into the tower and becomes compelled to venture in to rescue her. He soon finds himself falling into another world below his, where life and death seem to be entwined. As he navigates through this foreign realm to find Natsuko, Mahito must understand what it means to live if he wants to safely return home.

Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka won Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards and the 76th British Academy Film Awards. It was also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards and won two Annie Awards for Outstanding Achievement for Storyboarding in a Feature Production and Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in an Animated Feature Production.

As Miyazaki gets older his movies seem to become more and more about self-reflection. In The Wind Rises he processed the guilt he associates with his selfish desire to create movies and now with The Boy and the Heron (or as I prefer to call it, How do you Live) he goes even deeper to the root of this desire.

The movie starts uncharacteristically grounded and bleak for a Miyazaki movie, and I'm not just talking about the overall tone but about the design as well. It looks like it wasn't directed by Miyazaki but by one of the other Ghibli directors due to how bland ...

Quite good, and definitely worth watching, but Boy and the Heron doesn't quite live up to the standards of some of the better Ghibli movies.

Here's the thing with Studio Ghibli movies: They look and sound amazing. Everyone knows this. The problems tend to come from everything else. It could be the story, the pacing, the dialogue, etc. None of those things are particularly BAD here, but at the same time the story being told here feels incredibly incohesive and hard to piece together.

The world presented (later on) is complex and vast, but at the same time deliberately underexplained and demanding of more exploration. It ...

Why “The Boy and the Heron” Falls Short

“The Boy and the Heron” has been highly anticipated by many, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype for several reasons, leading me to not recommend it.

Firstly, the pacing of the film is incredibly slow. While some might argue that it’s meant to build atmosphere, it often feels like it’s dragging its feet, leaving viewers struggling to stay engaged.
