20But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

24Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

The Last Enemy Destroyed

20But now (A)Christ is risen from the dead, and has become (B)the firstfruits of those who have [a]fallen asleep. 21For (C)since by man came death, (D)by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall (E)be made alive. 23But (F)each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24Then comes the end, when He delivers (G)the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25For He must reign (H)till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26(I)The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27For (J)“He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28(K)Now when all things are made subject to Him, then (L)the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

20But in fact (A)Christ has been raised from the dead, (B)the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For as (C)by a man came death, (D)by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22For (E)as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then (F)at his coming (G)those who belong to Christ. 24Then comes the end, when he delivers (H)the kingdom to God the Father after destroying (I)every rule and every authority and power. 25For he must reign (J)until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26The last enemy to be (K)destroyed is death. 27For (L)“God[a] has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28When (M)all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that (N)God may be all in all.

FAQs

What is the lesson of 1 Corinthians 15 20 28? ›

When Paul says that the resurrected Christ is “the first fruits of those who are asleep,” he is telling these Corinthian Christians that Christ's resurrection is just the beginning. His resurrection signals the abundance of resurrections yet to come—the resurrection of all those who have placed their faith in Christ.

What is the meaning of 1 Corinthians 15-28? ›

When death is destroyed and the incarnate Son hands over His kingdom to the Father, then “God will be all in all” (1 Cor. 15:28). The sense here seems to be the restoration of creation to a point where only God's authority is exercised. Right now, death has a kind of delegated authority over sinners.

What does 1st Corinthians chapter 15 verse 20 mean? ›

Instead, Paul describes Him as the "firstfruits" of those who have died—those who have "fallen asleep". The firstfruits were the first of the season's crops given by faithful Jewish people to God. Paul's use of the term here means that Jesus was the first of the crop of "the dead" to be resurrected.

What does become the first fruits of them that slept mean? ›

Firstfruits of Them That Slept

Since the firstfruits are a sign that the harvest has begun and many more crops are yet to come, the Apostle Paul is saying that Jesus Christ was the first from among the dead (“them that slept”) to rise again and that many more will yet be resurrected.

What does 1 Corinthians 15 24 28 mean? ›

1 Corinthians 15:24-28 states that Jesus will reign only until all enemies have been placed under His feet, at which point He will hand everything to the Father and subject Himself to Him.

What does it mean that the husband is sanctified by the wife? ›

What Paul does seem to be saying is that God regards the unbelieving spouse and children of a Christian person as a holy spouse and children. This is precisely because the husband and wife are united as one, and one of them is united with Christ.

What does 1 Corinthians 15 22 28 mean? ›

Christ will reign over the entire kingdom until, when all is conquered, He will deliver it to the Father. Then Christ will be under the authority of the Father who made it possible for Christ to be in authority over everything else (1 Corinthians 15:22–27).

What does 1 Corinthians 15/29 mean? ›

Having concluded an aside about the order and purpose of the end times, Paul now returns to making his initial point. The case he is proving is that Christians will be physically resurrected in the end times, just as Christ was resurrected physically after the crucifixion.

What does 1 Corinthians chapter 15 mean? ›

1 Corinthians 15 is Paul's most extensive presentation of Christ's Parousia and our bodily resurrection as a result of Christ's future coming. That is because some of the Corinthians have rejected the notion of our bodily resurrection.

What does firstfruits mean in 1 Corinthians 15:20? ›

In 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul mentions Christ as the “first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Jesus was God's first fruits—his one and only son, and the best that humanity had to offer. God gave Jesus, who was raised from the dead, up for us, in the same way that we sacrifice the best we have for him.

What is the sermon of 1 Corinthians 15 20 21? ›

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:20-21 that in Adam all died, but in Christ all shall be made alive with resurrected bodies. Death has been defeated through the resurrection of Christ from the dead.

Is Corinthians after Jesus died? ›

Conclusion. Most scholars agree 1 Corinthians 15:3–5 is an early creed. Composed before Paul's conversion — immediately after Jesus' death or up to five years later.

What is the spiritual meaning of the first fruits? ›

Therefore, the firstfruits offering acknowledged God's ownership of everything, expressed thankfulness for His provision, and anticipated what was to come. Firstfruits were given at the Feast of Harvest (Ex. 23:16), the second of three annual festivals. This feast is also known as the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost (Ex.

What is the difference between first fruits and tithes? ›

God has often told me to encourage business owners and investors to give a first fruit offering of 1-2% off their gross profits before taxes. This is different from your tithes and offerings. The term tithe is a type of offering that would be 10% of the income you take for yourself.

Who are the first fruits of God? ›

Believers are beautifully said to be the first fruits of God. This is an absolute humbling thought. We as sinners redeemed by Jesus can be considered the first fruits of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 shares how because of Jesus, we are God's first fruits.

What is the lesson of 1st Corinthians 15? ›

If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then death has power over Him and defeated Him. If death has power over Jesus, He is not God. If Jesus is not God, He cannot offer a complete sacrifice for sins. If Jesus cannot offer a complete sacrifice for sins, our sins are not completely paid for before God.

What does it mean to visit orphans and widows in their affliction? ›

Visiting orphans and widows is so much more than just taking a trip to another country to hand out some food to people you will never see again; visiting orphans and widows means to look after, to take care of, to provide for, with the implication of continuous responsibility.

What does it mean that each believer's body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? ›

1 Corinthians 6:19 is a powerful reminder of the sacredness of our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. It calls us to honor and respect our bodies, taking care of our physical, mental, and emotional health, and living in accordance with God's standards and values.

What does it mean joy unspeakable and full of glory? ›

As in verse 6, Peter assumes that faith and love this concrete, this real, results in real rejoicing. Saving faith in Christ brings with it a joy which can't be expressed. Words can't contain it. It's a joy full of glory, reflecting our future with Christ in the moment in front of us.
